Are there ways to go soft on entrepreneurship and find a low-risk way to see if you are up to it?
Yes, there are many ways to find out if you are an entrepreneur. The simplest and most straightforward is to launch a small consultant business focusing on a service. It can be online marketing, analysis, programming, sales or something similar that can be delivered with little or no equipment, without an office or any other costs apart from the time put in.
Another way is to start a low-cost franchise. There are plenty of franchises that has very low starting fees, low monthly fees and that don’t require any up-front investments. Franchises have the advantage that they are tested; have a system and a business system that will be provided for you.
The advantage with making an entrepreneurial test of yourself is that you will have to deal with sales, hard work, customers, general management and running a business system.
The disadvantages are that that you are still not really establishing a businesses as many of the ideas, decisions and processes are either copied from somebody else – as with the consultant business – or provided for you – as in the case with the franchise.
Making a test of yourself will answer some of the hard questions though and they will serve as leads to if you are suitable as an entrepreneur. If you can’t manage a one-man consultancy or a franchise you are not it but if you don’t feel burdened by all the hard work and keep coming up with ideas on how to improve your little business you are ready to go on your own and start something bigger and more challenging.
