There is plenty of equipment that people can use that will help them out when they’re hiking. Whether you’re new to hiking or a veteran, you might need this equipment anyway because they make the hiking experience easier for you.

You might think that hiking is an equipment-less activity but you will be wrong. There are a lot of things that you can use in your hikes that will hugely improve the experience. For example, you can use hiking boots that is comfortable enough that you are able to hike for longer periods of time without your feet being too banged up and are durable as well.

One such trekking equipment that you can use to improve your hikes are trekking poles. Trekking poles help hikers improve their stability, especially when hiking on rockier or less smooth terrain. Aside from that, it also helps hikers manage the rhythm of their hikes so they are less fatigued when hiking.

Even as a beginner, you will benefit a lot from using trekking poles because they help make it easier for you to get used to hiking. For adept hikers, trekking poles are a definite must, especially for longer treks in wilder locations.

With that said, before you go out and get one for yourself, you have to check out a couple of things first.

1. Locks

One of the things you should look at when choosing the right trekking pole is what type of locking mechanism it has in place. The lock of a trekking pole helps make sure that once it’s extended, the pole doesn’t collapse back. Of course, if this fails during usage, it can cause accidents and injuries so it’s important that you check them out.

There are four different types of locking mechanisms in trekking poles. The more popular choice nowadays is the external lever lock systems which are easier to adjust, even when you’re wearing gloves.

It’s best that you get a feel for each lock and figure out how it fits into your hiking conditions. That way, you get the safest locking mechanism fit for you.

2. Shock absorbing

Hiking helps improve the strength of your legs, which is why a lot of people who want to improve their leg strength try and get into this activity. However, it can be difficult when starting out. For example, your joints may not be as limber or your knees might not be used to much weight. This is especially tough if you’re carrying a heavy pack with you.

With that in mind, you should make sure that you get a trekking pole that is durable and is good at absorbing shock from the impact of your descents. That way, the brunt of the weight doesn’t fall on your knees or joints who aren’t used to hiking.

3. Grip

With your trekking poles, you would want to get the most comfortable grip that you can. Even the grip of the trekking poles differs so you should also consider this matter carefully as some grips are better used in other ways more than other situations.

Cork material is able to absorb moisture well and is able to eventually adapt and mold itself into the shape of your hand. However, it can be expensive and heavy.

On the other hand, foam is the most comfortable and softest grip but it absorbs water too quickly. Thus, making them break easier.

Last but not least, there are rubber grips. Although they’re not the most comfortable especially in hot weather, they are pretty water-resistant so it’s great for the winter hikes.

4. Tips

Aside from the grip of the hiking sticks, the tips of the poles also are made out of different materials that each have different perks.

Rubber tips are great if you tend to hike in rocky and harder areas. They’re interchangeable, don’t leave much of a mark, nor make much noise.

On the other hand, steel spikes are pretty cheap. However, they’re not that long-lasting and have to be replaced often.

Lastly, there are tungsten carbide tips that balance durability and grip. The downside is that these are more expensive.

5. Length

When it comes to choosing the right length of your trekking pole, you should make sure that your elbows create a right angle when holding your poles on flat ground. Otherwise, the length needs to be adjusted to make it more suitable for your height.

There are plenty of poles that are adjustable. However, there are also ones that aren’t adjustable so you should consider the adjustability of these poles as well when making your decision.

Choosing the right trekking pole for your current hiking needs will vastly improve your hiking experience from before. Although it takes more time doing your research this way, you’ll be glad about the results of your research in the end when you’re out and about actually hiking with a solid and comfortable hiking pole in your hands.
