Providence

Providence is the capital city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It's home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, whose RISD Museum displays American art and silver. Nearby, 18th- and 19th-century homes line the streets of College Hill. Waterplace Park is the backdrop for the WaterFire art installation, which lights up the surrounding tidal basin most nights in the summer and for special events.

In the city center is the domed, marble Rhode Island State House. The Roger Williams National Memorial is a landscaped park honoring the city’s founder. Along cobblestoned Benefit Street, known as the Mile of History, are the John Brown House Museum, with exhibits on early America, and the Providence Athenaeum, a Greek Revival–style library. Nearby, the Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum is a Victorian mansion with stained glass and intricate woodwork. Federal Hill is a traditional Italian neighborhood known for its restaurants. To the south are the Providence Children’s Museum's hands-on exhibits and Roger Williams Park, with gardens, ponds and the Roger Williams Park Zoo.
